水晶の江戸風鈴です。

水晶は日本の山々で私たち夫婦が
拾い上げたもので、カットなどは一切していませんので形はいびつです。
海外の加工された水晶のように透明度が高くないものも多くありますが、自然ままの姿と音の美しさに耳を傾けてみてください。

クーラーも扇風機もない江戸時代 暑い昼は休んで昼寝をしながら 耳から涼をとる、昔の人の知恵

出来上がって、鳴りの部分を 他の硝子や金属のものと比べてみると 水晶だからこその 涼やかな音であることに気づく

そしてさまざまな硝子を試す中で やっと巡り逢ったこの硝子

私がこどものころ大好きで 創作のきっかけにもなった風鈴屋さんの 吊るしていたあの風鈴たちに 音や形が1番近いのが 江戸風鈴だった

江戸時代から変わらぬ製法 1320°C程の温度の炉に どろどろに溶かした硝子を用いて ひとつひとつ口で吹き膨らませてゆく 鳴り口がギザギザのまま整えるのが 江戸風鈴の特徴 この仕上げ故の音は 本当に美しい この製法で制作をしているのは 日本でも老舗のふたつばかり そちらでオーダーをして 制作をしていただいています。

This is a Crystal Edo Wind Chime.

Please choose one of the following tanzaku (paper strips): White, Light Indigo, Deep Indigo, or Navy Patterned. The crystal will be selected by us.

The crystals are ones that my husband and I personally collected from mountains in Japan. They have not been cut, polished, or shaped in any way, so each crystal has an irregular form.

Many are not as transparent as processed crystals from overseas, but we hope you will take a moment to appreciate the beauty and sound of these crystals in their natural state.

In the Edo period, before air conditioners and electric fans existed, people would rest during the hottest hours of the day and find a sense of coolness through sound while taking an afternoon nap. It was one of the simple wisdoms of everyday life.

After completing this piece and comparing the sound of its striker with those made from glass or metal, I realized that only crystal can produce such a clear and refreshing tone.

And after trying many different kinds of glass, I finally found this one.

When I was a child, there was a wind chime shop that I loved. The sound and shape of the wind chimes hanging there became one of the inspirations for my creative work. Among all the wind chimes I encountered, Edo wind chimes were the closest to those I remembered.

Edo wind chimes are still made using the same manufacturing method that has remained unchanged since the Edo period. Molten glass, heated to approximately 1,320°C (2,408°F), is gathered and each wind chime is individually blown by mouth.

One of the defining characteristics of an Edo wind chime is that the rim is left with its natural uneven edge rather than being smoothed. The sound created by this finishing method is truly beautiful.

Today, only a couple of long-established workshops in Japan continue to produce Edo wind chimes using this traditional technique. I commission the glass from one of these workshops for my work.
